About Me

MY BACKGROUND

My name is Kevin Reynolds – I am a current dental hygiene student attending Georgian College, set to graduate at the end of 2024. I previously attended college and university with a focus in business, but I struggled to align myself with the values and nature of the corporate world. After some careful reflection, I opted to enter the healthcare field as I believe access to health services is integral to a functional society. Today, I am pursuing my passion of helping motivate, educate, and provide for the community by studying to become a dental hygienist, with hopes to inspire and give confidence to those who wish to improve their oral health. I also intend to advocate for both my profession and for underserved communities to improve their access to care once I become an RDH.

In my free time, I enjoy going for hikes, indulging in my nerdy hobbies of gaming and collecting trading cards, and spending time with my cat Franklin. Other interests of mine include appreciating tattoo artistry, watching and playing hockey, and cooking various meals and desserts. Some of the values that are most important to me are honesty, compassion, and inclusion – which I believe will translate well into my future career as a dental professional.

Introductory Reflection

Why Dental Hygiene?

As I signed off for the day after answering the final customer call at my remote job, I found myself questioning whether I was really helping people. I began to realize that my values did not meet those of the business world. This is when I decided it was time for a change, and proceeded to look into various healthcare pathways. What ultimately drew me to dental hygiene was the program length, the employment opportunities, and the satisfaction of knowing that I would be helping people improve their overall health. Fast forward one year later, and I have completed the first semester of my program. While there are always opportunities to improve, I feel exceptionally happy with both the effort I put in and the results I received. Having been in a post secondary environment previously, I knew the expectations that came with it and the importance of self-motivation and time management. I learned from my previous mistakes and made sure to stay on top of my work by attending all classes and using a planner to organize my weeks. With being such a small program, I have met some truly wonderful people who look to follow the same journey as myself. It has been extremely beneficial to bounce ideas off each other, and to work together understanding the concepts and skills we are being taught. It also helps to enjoy what you're studying, and it is a phenomenal feeling to have finally found a program and profession that does exactly that. There are still improvements I can make in my future semesters; including spending more time reviewing content, and perfecting my time management skills. I'm most excited to continue learning the practical skills that ultimately become the foundation of our future careers.
